Share

Your Union is seeking members in good standing who are interested in representing Unifor Local 531 on the upcoming Pay Equity Committee at WestJet.

This is an important opportunity to help shape a fair and transparent pay equity process for our members and your participation will be fully paid for by the Company

We are seeking two volunteers - one primary representative and one alternate representative who will replace the primary due to absence.

What Pay Equity Committee Members Do

As a committee member, you’ll play a central role in developing and implementing the Pay Equity Plan under the federal Pay Equity Act that ensures comparable work that is predominantly done by women and gender-diverse employees is fairly valued and compensated

Key Responsibilities

Members on a Pay Equity Committee work collaboratively with representatives from the employer, unions, and non-union employees. Together you will:

  • Identify job classes in the workplace — grouping roles with similar duties and requirements.
  • Determine gender predominance — which job classes are predominantly male, female, or gender neutral.
  • Assess and value work performed — using agreed-upon methods to determine the relative value of different job classes.
  • Compare pay and compensation between job classes to identify inequities.
  • Help build the Pay Equity Plan that addresses any gaps found in pay for work of equal value.
  • Participate in consensus-based decision making with other committee members.

Committee members often attend meetings, review workplace job data, and participate in discussions that influence pay equity outcomes. Employers are required to provide time off work, access to space, tools, and training to support your role.

Commitment and Support

  • Paid time away from operational shifts — your scheduled shifts will be replaced so you can participate fully.
  • Training provided — you will receive training to support your role and understand the process.
  • Valuable experience — this is meaningful work that contributes to fairness and equity for thousands of union members.

Key Qualities for Pay Equity Representatives

  1. Analytical Skills. Ability to review and interpret data, including pay scales, job descriptions, and compensation structures. Comfortable identifying patterns, inequities, and anomalies.
  2. Attention to Detail. Careful and thorough in reviewing documents, evaluating job classifications, and ensuring calculations are accurate.
  3. Understanding of Pay Equity & Employment Law. Familiarity with the federal Pay Equity Act and how it applies in a workplace context. Education in gender studies, social justice, or human resources is a definite asset.
  4. Strong Communication Skills. Able to explain findings clearly to union members, employers, and fellow committee members. Comfortable facilitating discussions and advocating for fairness.
  5. Collaboration & Teamwork. Willing to work constructively with management, union representatives, and other committee members. Open to consensus-based decision-making.
  6. Integrity & Confidentiality. Able to handle sensitive workplace information responsibly while maintaining transparency with union members.
  7. Problem-Solving & Critical Thinking. Can identify inequities, propose solutions, and support strategies that address historic pay gaps.
  8. Organizational Skills. Able to manage time, attend meetings, track documentation, and follow through on assigned responsibilities.
  9. Empathy & Union Member-Focused Perspective. Understanding of the challenges faced by union members and a commitment to ensuring fair and equitable treatment for all employees.
  10. Willingness to Learn. Open to training on pay equity methodology, job evaluation techniques, and legislative compliance.

Why This Matters

The Pay Equity Act was established to correct historic gender-based pay disparities and ensure workplaces identify and fix unfair differences in compensation. By serving as a union representative on this committee, you help protect members’ rights and ensure the process is transparent, informed, and fair. Your voice matters in a process designed to ensure equity across jobs in a large and diverse workforce.
