Unifor Local 531 is aware of the recent timekeeping issues our members are facing since the company issued an email resetting their timekeeping expectations on July 21, 2025. We are also aware of the inconsistent communication and direction members have been receiving from their leaders at the Base level.
The Union fully recognizes how critical On-Time Performance is at the airport, and we expect all members to be on time for work and their assigned tasks. However, your Union has made it very clear to the Company that our position remains unchanged. We expect our members will be paid for all time worked, including any minutes after their scheduled end time if they are operationally held back from leaving. The practice of rounding up or down our members time is not one we agree with and it must change.
Today, the Union was made aware that our members are being sent emails from their DPMs for swiping out a single minute early. Subsequently, the union spoke to the company about reasonableness and fairness in timekeeping practices. This situation has become increasingly problematic, and we have requested a meeting to address concerns arising from the Company’s timekeeping communications. While our members are scheduled with specific start and end times, it is unreasonable to suggest that one minute has a meaningful operational impact at the end of their shift or our members deserve coaching or disciplinary actions taken against them.
If the Company’s expectation is that members swipe out exactly on time, it is the Union’s position is that members should also swipe in exactly on time, not earlier. Members’ time before their shift belongs to them, not the Company.
The Union has requested a meeting with the Company to address these issues, clarify expectations, and ensure a reasonable, consistent approach moving forward. Until we are able to meet, the union has requested that the company exercise reasonableness. Sending members emails for swiping out one minute early is unproductive and undermines union–management relations.
We commit to providing the members with an update when it becomes available.
