The union and members are now in receipt of the company's recent communication regarding the cyberattack that occurred on June 13, 2025. While we acknowledge the company has now provided an update, we want you to know that our local union has been actively monitoring this situation since day one to ensure your privacy, safety, and rights as employees are being taken seriously.
Your Union Took Action
On June 27 the union reached out to hold the leadership accountable for transparent communication. Our concerns were escalated directly to Dave Powell, Vice President-Airports as well as the company's Labour Relations managers, requesting clarity on:
- What employee data may have been compromised
- Whether bargaining unit members were affected
- What support would be offered to impacted staff
- When a formal communication would be made to employees
Our persistence contributed to pressure on the employer to finally provide the update you received.
Data Involved
According to the company’s message, the data breach included certain personal and travel information and affected some current and former WestJet Encore employees. No credit card numbers or guest passwords were compromised, but employment data was illegally obtained. If you are a former Encore employee and receive notification from the company, we urge you to review the information carefully, take advantage of any support offered and report any suspected misuse of your data.
As our members are not only employees at WestJet but also guests, because some personal and travel related data was obtained, the company will be contacting certain individuals in the coming days to provide information and support. Ensure you are watchin the email address you have registered with your WestJet Rewards account.
What You Can Do
If you have any concerns or questions about how this incident affects you:
- Contact your Unifor Local 531 Workplace Representative or Unit Chair or
- If you believe your personal data has been misused, consider filing a complaint with the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada
We also remind members to remain vigilant. If you notice unusual activity related to your personal accounts or work email, report it to WestJet IT and the union and keep a record of all communications.
The Union's Commitment
We understand how stressful and unsettling these situations can be. Please know that your union will continue to monitor developments closely and advocate for full transparency and accountability. The company has a responsibility to safeguard your personal information, and we will continue to push for proper disclosure, follow-up, and long-term measures to protect employees' privacy.
