On February 28, Unifor proudly hosted its 3rd Annual Black History Month Celebration, bringing together members from Toronto and across the country for an evening of reflection, recognition, and celebration.

The event highlighted the importance of honouring Black history, culture, leadership, and the ongoing contributions of Black union members within our workplaces and communities. Members gathered not only to celebrate achievements, but to strengthen solidarity and reaffirm our commitment to equity, representation, and justice within our union and beyond.

A Historic Moment for Local 531

It was an especially meaningful night for our Local, as our very own YYZ Women’s Advocate, Donnarie Evans, was named the first-ever recipient of the Black Excellence in Leadership Award.

This prestigious award recognizes outstanding leadership, community involvement, workplace advocacy, and union activism. Donnarie’s selection as the inaugural recipient is a testament to the impact she has made through her commitment to supporting members, advocating for equity, and uplifting others both inside and outside the workplace. As Women’s Advocate, Donnarie has provided guidance, support, and a safe voice for members navigating difficult situations.

We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Donnarie Evans on this well-deserved recognition. Your Local 531 family is incredibly proud.
